Where ARE All The Singles?

“Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.” —Luke 14:23
Have you ever looked around your church and wondered, “Where are all the singles?” Perhaps you are one of only a few single adults in your congregation, or maybe you attend a singles ministry that struggles to reach new people. It may feel as though Christian singles are disappearing—but they are not. Singles are everywhere. They simply may not be coming to our churches, Bible studies, or ministry events.
Some singles have attended a church or singles ministry in the past and had a disappointing experience. They may have felt ignored, judged, pressured to date, or treated as though their lives were incomplete without marriage. Others do not know that your ministry exists, or they assume it is only for a certain age group or type of single adult. Some have simply become comfortable living disconnected from Christian community.
Luke 14:23 reminds us that we are called to go out and invite people in. We cannot always expect other singles to find us. Sometimes we need to meet them where they already are—at work, in our neighborhoods, at the gym, in community groups, or even sitting alone in another part of the church.
As a single adult, you have an important role in helping others feel welcome. Think about what you experienced the first time you attended your church, Bible study, or singles event. Did someone greet you, introduce you to others, and invite you to sit with them? Or did you have to figure everything out on your own? The way we welcome someone on their first visit may determine whether they return.
Take a moment to think about the singles God has already placed in your life. Is there a coworker, neighbor, friend, or family member who could use encouragement and Christian community? They may be waiting for someone like you to personally invite them.
This month, challenge yourself to invite one new single person to church, a Bible study, or a social event. Do not simply send them a link. Reach out personally, offer to meet them at the door, sit with them, and introduce them to others. Your invitation may be the beginning of the connection, healing, and spiritual growth for which they have been praying.
So, where are all the singles? They are all around us. Perhaps the better question is: Are we willing to go out, welcome them, and help them find their place in God’s family?

Connecting with Kris Swiatocho and her ministry gave me greater understanding on ministry to singles and how to equip a team of leaders. We had a good singles ministry but when she spent time in leadership training with my community group leaders and my leadership team, our ministry grew in depth, vision, and had men step up to lead. Her time training our team was invaluable to our ministry being effective to reach singles. |
