Saturday that night I spoke at Mutley Baptist Church to a handful of single adults who came for a variety of reasons. Some admitted they came due to being curious, some came desiring community and friendship and others thought it was a singles dating event. But no matter why they came, they came. We got a late start and as a result I ended later. I assumed everyone would get up and leave but they didn't. They not only stayed around but also talked. We talk about being single, various frustrations, the fears of being alone forever, dating online, pastors and churches lack of understanding and support, etc. We also talked about our part. What was God asking us to do to change things. Our sitting down discussion led to standing up around the coffee pot then just standing around. It continued down the hall and then the steps towards the outside of the church. People didn't want to go home yet. People were hungry for community. They were hungry for Christ. They were hungry for direction.
Upon looking back I could see how one person can literally create a spark that ignites a fire. How my work in London connected me with Tania who would become one of my UK leaders. Our friendship would lead to networking in the Plymouth area, which would lead to Funmi, the singles leaders at Mutley Baptist. Funmi had been struggling as their singles ministry had become social based. A ministry without the depth that was needed to guarantee long-term growth. She had prayed for direction. She had prayed for help. She had prayed for an answer. Then she heard from me and Tania.
As you continue this journey on the way to the Ignite Retreat weekend, ask the Lord what he is asking from you. Maybe he is calling you to start a singles ministry where you are? Maybe join in an existing one to help support and lead? Maybe he is asking you to help serve at the retreat? Maybe he is asking you to help facilitate the spark that creates the fire in leading more to Christ. Whatever it is, just pray!
The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire.”
