Years ago, prior to my dad's death we were discussing this very topic. My dad turned to me and said, you know, if you live long enough, most everyone you love will have died. It's apart of life. Loss is inevitable. It's not IF we are going to lose those we love, its' when. And in the meantime, how are we living? How are they living? I had shared with him how much I despised going to funerals. They are so depressing. I want to celebrate with joy the life they live in Christ (well assuming they knew Christ). I want to celebrate their new life in heaven. I don't want to sit around being sad and crying. I want to shout at the top of my lungs, it is well, it is well with my soul (and theirs). But the reality is it isn't well with our souls. The pain of the loss of that person is so deep that the healing may take months, years or never while here on this earth. So how do we use this loss? How can we use this pain? What do we do with it? I mean, its going to happen so what would God have us do?
God is with us.
Psalm 34:18 NIV The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Have joy and peace knowing they are with God.
John 14:27-29 ESV Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.
God will heal us.
Psalm 147:3 ESV He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
God wants us to help others.
2 Corinthians 1:4-6 ESV Who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.
Remember, one day this world will pass. God will wipe away all our tears. There will be no more death, no more sadness, and no more loss.
Revelation 21: 4 NIV He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Yes, loss is going to happen. Rejoice in knowing God is with you. He will comfort you. One day you will use this pain, this experience, this season to help someone else going through the same thing. It will all be used for God..to bring others to him.
