The episode I watch this morning was when Andy visited Barney in Raleigh. Barney was a detective and not doing too well. They were just about to get rid of him when Andy visits. There had been several robberies of local super markets and no one was able to catch them. We would find out that Barney was actually leaking the info regarding what supermarkets the police were watching to crooks at his boarding house. Andy quickly caught on and helps to nab the crooks giving all the credit to Barney. This of course, gave Barney the respect he needed. It also guaranteed Barney wouldn't be coming back to Mayberry.
What I loved about this episode was how Andy helped Barney. He was always trying to put others first. He knew by helping Barney, it pretty much guaranteed he wouldn't be coming back to Mayberry. He missed his old friend. But Andy, again, was thinking of Barney and not himself.
Andy gives us a great example of putting others first. To work things out for others to get the glory, the respect, ad the admiration. We all know Andy was smarter than Barney and always had been. But Andy shows us that it wasn't about him. Barney was a great guy but needed someone to come along side and encourage, guide and direct him. He needed a friend who wasn't out to get anything from him. A real friend. But Andy did get something out of this friendship. He got a friend who loved and cared for him back. A friend who trusted him. A friend for life.
So when you are leading your singles ministry or any ministry whether its a bible study in your home to coaching kids playing basketball to having coffee with one other person, remember to think of them first. Try to help them by encouraging, supporting and listening them. Try to not be the one who shines but instead let Jesus shine through you to them. Who knows, you may just develop a friend for life. John 13:34
